Ramesh Gholap: The story of a Bangle Seller who is now an IAS officer

”Dedication and commitment are what transfer dreams into realities”. Ramesh Gholap from Maharastra who used to sell bangles with his mother is now an IAS officer. Let us know the inspiring story of Ramesh.

Ramesh was born in village Mahagaon in Barshi Tulaka, Solapur district of Maharastra. He was a bright child. His father Gorakh Gholap who was the earning member of his family could not run his cycle shop as his health deteriorated because of constant drinking.

To earn bread Ramu’s mother Vimal Gholap started selling bangles in a nearby village. Although Ramu’s left leg was affected by polio, he with his brother started helping their mother in selling bangles.

Ramu and his brother would ask people to buy bangles and their mother would help women to try them on.

After completing his primary education from Mahagaon, Ramu went to stay in Barshi with his uncle to study further.

He studied well and was praised by his teachers. But, in the year 2005, when he was in class 12, he got news of his father’s death. Ramu did not even have the fare to travel to his village. His neighbors helped him with money only then he was able to attend the last rites of his father.

After four days of his father’s death he had his chemistry model exam, he gave his exam after his mother insisted him but left exams of all other subjects. His teachers helped him with his exams due to which he scored 88.5% in his 12th exams.

In spite of scoring well, he chooses to do D.Ed (Diploma in Education) because it was the only course he affords to get a job and support his family. He started working as a teacher in 2009 after completing D.Ed and graduation in Arts.

Ramu lived with his mother and brothers in a room provided by his aunt. Ramu saw that the poor are been exploited and manipulated by an officer who asked them for money to get them their pensions. He was also angry with the ration shop owner who sold the kerosene which was to be distributed to poor and needy families.

During his college days, Ramu was a member of student’s union who often went to tehsildar to get approval to various college issues. He considered tehsildar as an influential and powerful government official and decided to study for public service exam to become a tehsildar so that he could solve all the problem faced by the families like his.

He took leave from his job and went to stay in Pune to study for UPSC. Ramu could not succeed in his first attempt so he tried again with more determination. He left the job and cleared the State Institute of Administrative Careers (SIAC) exam.

Ramu cleared UPSC in 2011 with an All India Rank of 287, without any coaching. Ramu returned to his village on 12 May 2012, after becoming an IAS officer. He also cleared MPSC (Maharastra Public Service Commission) scoring the highest ever marks of 1244 out of 1800.

Ramesh Gholap who is presently posted in Jharkhand has given more than 300 informational and motivational talks to youngsters aspiring to take the MPSC or UPSC exams.

Y. Aasife Ahmed is the owner of Aasife Biryani, which is a popular chain of biryani outlets in Chennai. Aasife Biryani has nine branches in the city with an annual turnover of around Rs. 70 crores. Aassife’s childhood was full of struggles, challenges, and hardships. He started delivering newspapers while he was in class seven. Then he started selling old notebooks and papers to wholesale market for making a good profit.

After his father lost his job he was shifted from a private school to a government school. At the age of 14, Aasife started doing knitting work on the leather footwear for a company in Chrompet.

When the leather industry went through a slump Aasife joined as an assistant to Asmath, a biryani specialist in the area. He was paid Rs 500 whenever Asmath hired him.

Y. Aasife Ahmed was not much for bookish learning, his interest was more into cooking. So at the age of 18, he apprehend with a biryani cook. His passion for cooking and his experience under veteran cook gave him the confidence to start a venture of his own.

”I knew what I was passionate about, and I set about pursuing my dream”.

”It was my love for cooking, the desire to achieve something big in life, hard work, and my self-confidence that contributed to my growth”, says Aasife.

Aasife started with five kg of biryani on a thallu vandi (pushcart) on Butt Road in St. Thomas Mount, which has now grown to 500 kg of biryani per day served out at four Aasife Biryani Centre outlets all around the city.

He maintained the quality of biryani irrespective of the change in prices of the ingredients, which attracted more customers.

In three months his daily sale increased which resulted in an increase in profit. He bought a Bajaj M80 to transport the food from home to his shop. Unfortunately, he had to shut down his shop due to threats from local Rowdy. He set up shop at Butt Road in St. Thomas Mount. After 3 years, he shifted his shop to a large multi-cuisine outlet in a 1,500 sq ft area in near place. In 2014 they had a total of eight restaurants. In an interview, Aasife said ” The expansion was mainly funded through banks and private loans. I ploughed back most of the profit back into the business as well”.

While the shop was established as Aasife and Brothers, they have now parted ways. He gave two restaurants each to his two brothers and mother and kept remaining two himself, which are now part of Aasife Biryani Private Limited, where he holds 99 percent stakes.

Aasife who got married in 2004, and has a daughter and two sons.

Prateek Sharma: The man who quit a bank job to create a broker-free market for farmers

Prateek Sharma was born in a village near Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. His family was mainly involved in farming. He started farming at the age of 10. Prateek moved to Bhopal for his studies after class 8. After a few years later Prateek Sharma was appointed as the chief manager of Kotak Mahindra Bank. Prateek Sharma left the job as a banker after ten years and started his farming venture in Bhopal. In 2015, he had set up a poly house in his farm to grow exotic and off-season vegetables. For him, quitting his job was not an easy decision to make as the income was not much from farming. It was difficult for him make a profit with the produce as the transportation charges and the cost of pesticides and chemical fertilizers were high. Moreover, the merchants who sell the produce, decide the price at which the produce is sold, thus bagging the profit. Prateek Sharma realized that he had to go for organic farming. Organic farming will create own value to produce. While talking to TBI Prateek said ” The first time I took my tomatoes to Mandi, I had to pay Rs 900 from my pocket, including the transportation and the best-high quality tomatoes were sold for Rs 1.25 per kg. That is where I realized that this model is not sustainable for farmers at all and that we have to go organic and create our own value chain. Prateek with Vinay Yadav, an educated farmer started their own value chain. They started selling their vegetables and grains while skipping the middlemen. Later they decided to form a group of farmers to grow varieties of vegetables.

For the next few months, they studied successful farming models and even trained at Abhinav farmer’s club, Pune. However their venture in the first year failed, the reason behind the failure was the limited knowledge of growing vegetables and from chemical to organic farming. The second round of crop was successful and they had a good amount of produce. Prateek took charge of marketing their produce and started taking their vegetables to Mandi twice a week. They also started getting loyal customers. Their team started helping other farmers to switch to organic farming. The team started two farmer resource centers one at Dhaba Khurd and other at Nathmula Ganj to get free training about organic farming. They also provided the resources required for organic farming.

When asked about what made him quit his job and do farming Prateek told, ”I came back to my village because farming was my first love. When I moved to my village I had never thought that I would do community farming. But eventually, realized that it was the need of the hour for the farmers. The USP of our model is that input cost is zero as we make all the organic manure and pesticides locally, there are no middlemen and so the farmers earn double than what he was earning before”.

Srikant Pantawane’s journey from an auto driver to pilot with IndiGo

Nagpur’s Srikant Pantawane was an auto driver who went on to become a pilot with one of the leading airlines, Indigo. He is the son of a security guard. His struggles and hardships proved that nothing is impossible if one is determined for it. What is truly motivating is his will to achieve what he dreamt of.


Srikant started working as a delivery boy in his early days to support his family. To meet the family’s finances he later started driving an auto. At a very young age, Srikant took the responsibilities of the family on his shoulders. He balanced both his job and studies to support his family.
He was never disheartened by the hardships, obstacles, and problems that came in his way. He fought against all odds to pursue his dreams.
Once when Srikant had gone to deliver a parcel, he learned from cadets that one can become pilot even without being inducted in the Indian Air Force. This conversation with the cadets was the turning point in the life of Srikant.


Later during his conversation with a tea-staller, he learned about a pilot scholarship program by the DGCA.
After learning about the scholarship program Srikant immediately started preparing for the scholarship.
Srikant started preparing for the exam from his 12th-grade books. He passed the exam with flying colors. A few weeks later he was in a flight school in Madhya Pradesh.


He overcame his biggest obstacle of English with the help of his friends. Srikant passed the examination and got his commercial license, but he had to wait because of the global recession in the aviation market.
Pantawane worked as an executive until he received a call from IndiGo Airlines to include him as a First Officer in its pack of pilots.
His story is a true example of hard work and determination.

Shashwat Shukla: Barefoot Runner, who fought against all odds to set the world record

Shashwat Shukla, a barefoot runner from Pune became the fastest man to run 15 Kilometers (in under an hour), a feat certified by the UK based World Book of Records. Shashwat ran the distance in just 58 minutes 12 seconds on March 2019 despite a twisted leg.


The story behind the record performance of Shashwat has pain, Heartbreak, sweat, and toil. He is not new to running, he was a runner back in 2007 where he gathered praise in 1500 meters races.
Shashwat suffered an accident in 2007, which bent his leg by nearly five centimeters. His left leg became crooked from the knee below.
He was told that he could never run again or even walk again. He could barely stand or sit. Shashwat could not even wear a certain type of clothes like jeans or tracksuits due to the injury.
After struggling for seven years, Shashwat got back on his feet. One day while walking barefoot on the banks of river Ganga he realized that he wasn’t finding it difficult to walk barefoot. He once again got in touch with his old coach, Ram Singh, who represented India in the 2012 Olympics which were held in London. His coach advised him to switch into the field of barefoot running.
However, barefoot running is difficult from usual running because athletes don’t wear any footwear which puts the feet on the risk of injury from gravels or pointed materials.
Shashwat said, ” I wanted to show people that you don’t need expensive shoes to run”.
Unfortunately, the same year he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It took him two years to be treated for it. During which time he had to again give up running.
Shashwat completed his bachelor’s degree in commerce during this time. His Grandfather and his coach believed in him and supported his passion for running. He credits his success to both of them.
Shashwat considers Ram Singh as his brother and his grandfather as his Idol. Shashwat said, “My grandfather has taught me about the importance of respect, hard work, and honesty. They are in my blood. I had told him that one day, ‘I will achieve something so great that your name will shine in society because of me’, and today I did it by breaking the record”.

Shashwat finally started training in 2016. He would train for two hours from 5 a.m., Monday to Saturday. In evenings he indulged into his hobby of playing the flute. He also completed his bachelors in a Law degree. He developed both, physical and mental strength.
Now after breaking the record in 2019, he wants to represent India at 2020 100K World Championship which is going to be held in the Netherlands.
He credits his return to the people around him.
“I had the support of many good people – My family, my grandfather and my friends. They all helped me a lot”, Shashwat told TOI.

Early Life

Tulasi Munda was born on 15th July 1947, in Kainshi, Keonjhar. Keonjhar was one of the backward district of Odisha. At an early age she wanted to study but in Kainshi village, no one had idea of educating the girl child. At that time child labour, poverty and slavery were the main hindrances in girl education. At the age of 12 years she was sent to another village named Serenda to live with her sister. She worked in mines but whenever she got little time she used to taught herself from books. She worked as labourer in iron mines, cutting stones and shifting iron from the waste, for which she was paid Rs 2 per week.

Her works to reduce Illiteracy

During 1961, she came under the influence of great women like Malti Choudhary, Roma Devi and Nirmala Deshpande, who were well-known for their commitment towards educating women. She joined them and participated in their struggles in different parts of the country. She met Vinobha Bhave and was inspired by his vision and commitment to donate land and improve the lives of poor villages.
In 1964, she returned to Serenda Village and devoted herself to educate girl childs and women. At first she used to teach in Verandah of Serenda’s local pradhan. As the children went to work in day time she started evening classes.
But soon, her school began to take up more of her time as villagers who worked all day long, began sending their small children to Tulasi’s Verandah. Soon the Verandah got too small, so in 1966, she shifted her school to a plot of land with a shed outside the village.
Over the next 50 years, Tulasi helped establish 17 school and succeeded in edcating 20,000 boys and girls. At present, ‘Adivasi Vikas Samiti School’, set up by Tulasi Munda provides education upto 10th standard and enrolls over 500 students, more than half of them are girls.

Accolades

For her great work, Tulasi Munda has recieved Padma Shri in year 2001 in recognition of her undying spirit and sheer determination in eradicating illiteracy. In 2011 Tulasi Munda won Odisha Living Legend Award for Excellence in Social service. She received Lakshmipat Singhania – IIM Lucknow National Leadership Award in the category of Community Service Leader Award at a function, in New Delhi on June 10, 2009.
Tulasi Munda believes that Illiteracy is the worst form of enslavement, it is the root cause of poverty, unemployment, drunkenness, superstition and fear. Education is the tool to free people’s mind from darkness of ignorance.

Personal Life

Mohammed Siraj comes from a poor and humble family background. His father Ghouse Mohammad, is an auto driver by profession for the past 30 years. They lived in a small rented flat in Banjara Hills in Hyderabad.
Siraj was born in 1994 in Hyderabad. He did not took any professional training for cricket. His brother is a software engineer who works in a reputed IT firm. Siraj’s family wanted him to study engineering but his passion for cricket ensured his selection in IPL, State and National Team.
Siraj started his cricketing career as a batsman and later shifted to bowling. He developed his ability to bowl yorkers by playing tennis ball cricket.


Domestic Career

Mohammad Siraj made his first-class debut on 15 November 2015 by playing for Hyderabad in 2015-2016 Ranchi Trophy. He impressed the selectors by picking 41 wickets in nine matches, which led the selectors picking him for the rest of India team for the Irani Cup.
His hard work paid off in February 2017 when he was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the Indian Premier League of 2017 for 2.6 crores. His base price was just 20 lakhs. He played 6 matches in
Indian Premier League 2017 and picked up 10 wickets with best figures of 4/32 against Gujarat Lions at Kanpur. His brilliant performance against Gujarat Lions fetched him first Man of the Match award in
Indian Premier League .

International Career

In October 2017, he was named in India’s Twenty20 International squad for series against New Zealand. He made his T20 debut for India on 4 November 2017, taking the wicket of Kane Williamson.
In September 2018, he was named in India’s Test squad for their series against West Indies but he did not play.
He made hid ODI debut against Australia at the Adelaide oval on 15 January 2019.
In an interview with Mid-Day Siraj said that he wants to buy a small house for his family. He wants his parents to enjoy a good life. He also wants that his father to quit driving an auto and rest, for all the hard work he had done for the family over the years.
He is definitely a talent to watch for.

उम्मुल खैर : एक प्रेरणा

एक ऐसी लड़की जिसने आत्मविश्वास और आत्मनिर्भरता को अपनी सफलता का प्रथम चरण बनाया।

आत्मविश्वास और आत्मनिर्भरता सफलता की दो महत्वपूर्ण कुंजिया है लेकिन किसी गंभीर बीमारी से जूझते हुए अपने अंदर आत्मविश्वास पैदा करना एवं आत्मनिर्भर बनना आसान नहीं होता है। उम्मुल खैर अजेले बोन डिसऑर्डर बीमारी के साथ पैदा हुई, ये एक ऐसी बीमारी है जिसमे व्यक्ति की हड्डिया कमजोर हो जाती है। हड्डिया कमजोर होने की वजह से गिरने या झटके लगने की बजह से फेक्चर होने की ज्यादा सम्भावना होती है। यही कारण है की उम्मुल को अठ्ठाइस वर्ष की उम्र में पंद्रह से ज्यादा फेक्चर हो चुके है। इतनी जटिल बीमारी से जूझने के बाद भी उम्मुल ने उम्मीद नहीं छोड़ी, उन्होंने अपने भीतर आत्मविश्वास जगाया और आत्मनिर्भर बनकर देश की सर्वोच्च प्रशासनिक सेवा की परीक्षा में 420 वी रैंक हासिल की। एक ऐसी परीक्षा जिसमे हर सुविधाओं से सुसज्जित व्यक्ति भी प्रथम प्रयास में सफलता प्राप्त नहीं कर पता लेकिन राजस्थान के छोटे से गांव पाली में जन्मी उम्मुल जिसको बीमारी अपने जन्म के साथ ही उपहार में मिली उसने अपने पहले ही प्रयास में 420 वी रैंक हासिल कर के साबित कर दिया की आत्मविश्वास एवं आत्मनिर्भर होकर व्यक्ति जीवन की सारी कठिनाईयो को पार कर सकता है।

उम्मुल का संघर्ष भरा बचपन

उम्मुल का बचपन दिल्ली के घुग्गी इलाकों में बीता, उम्मुल के पिता फुटपाथ पर मूंगफली बेचा करते थे। सन 2001 में अतिक्रमण की बजह से बहुत झुग्गियां टूट गयी उनमे से एक झुग्गी उम्मुल की भी थी, झुग्गी टूटने के बाद उम्मुल का परिवार किराय के माकन में रहने लगा उस वक्त उम्मुल सातवीं कक्षा में पढ़ती थी। घर में आर्थिक तंगी होने के कारण उम्मुल का परिवार नहीं चाहता था की उम्मुल आगे पढाई करे लेकिन उम्मुल आगे पढ़ना चाहती थी। हमारे देश में अमूमन गरीब एवं मध्यमबर्गी परिवार, लड़कियों को अधिक शिक्षित नहीं करना चाहते उनका मानना होता है की आगे चलकर शादी होने के बाद लड़कियों को सिर्फ घरेलू काम करने होते है, इसलिए शिक्षा का कोई महत्व नहीं रह जाता। उम्मुल ने अपने परिवार के आगे न पढ़ने के फैसले को नकार कर स्वयं ही अपनी पढाई का खर्च उठाने का फैसला लिया और अपने आसपास के बच्चो को ट्यूशन पढ़ाना शुरू कर दिया। उम्मुल अपने ट्यूशन से जितना भी पैसा कमाती सारा अपनी पढाई में खर्च कर देती।

माँ का देहांत

आर्थिक समस्यों और बीमारी से जूझ रही उम्मुल के ऊपर कठनाईयो का पहाड़ तब टूटा जब उनकी माँ का देहांत हो गया। उम्मुल का अपनी सौतेली माँ के साथ रिश्ता अच्छा नहीं था और घर में आर्थिक समस्यों के चलते पढाई आगे जारी रखना उम्मुल के लिए बहुत मुश्किल होता जा रहा था। इसी कठिन समय ने उम्मुल को आत्मनिर्भर बनाया।

आत्मविश्वास से आत्मनिर्भरता का सफर

उम्मुल में आत्मविश्वास की कोई भी कमी नहीं थी, जहाँ लोग जीने की उम्मीद छोड़ देते है वहाँ उम्मुल ने अपने सपनो को साकार करने के लिए और अपनी पढाई आगे जारी रखने के लिए अपना घर छोड़कर पूर्ण आत्मनिर्भर बनने का निर्णय लिया। नवी क्लास में ही घर छोड़कर उम्मुल एक अलग कमरा किराय से लेकर रहने लगी, अपना खर्च उठाने के लिए वह रोज 8 -8 घंटे ट्यूशन पढ़ाने लगी।

विकलांग बच्चो के स्कूल से गार्गी कालेज तक का सफर

उम्मुल पांचवी कक्षा तक विकलांग बच्चो के स्कूल में पढ़ी फिर आठवीं कक्षा तक एक मुफ्त स्कूल अमर ज्योति चैरिटेबल ट्रस्ट में पढ़ी, उम्मुल आठवीं कक्षा में स्कूल टॉपर थी इसलिए उन्हे पूर्ण स्कॉलरशिप के साथ एक प्राइवेट स्कूल में दाखिला मिल गया। उम्मुल ने इस स्कूल में भी अपनी प्रतिभा दिखाई और कक्षा दसवीं में 91% तथा कक्षा बारहवीं में 90% अंक प्राप्त किये। उम्मुल ने बाहरवीं के बाद दिल्ली यूनिवर्सिटी के गार्गी कालेज में साइकोलॉजी में ग्रेजुएशन की।

आईएएस बनने तक का सफर

जब उम्मुल गार्गी कालेज में थी तब उन्होंने अलग – अलग देशो में दिव्यांग लोगो के कार्यक्रम में भारत के प्रतिनिधित्व किया। अपनी ग्रेजुएशन पूरी करने के बाद जेएनयू में मास्टर ऑफ़ आर्ट्स के लिए एडमिशन लिया, जेएनयू के हॉस्टल का चार्ज काम होने की बजह से अब उम्मुल को ज्यादा टूशन नहीं पढ़ाना पड़ता था। अपनी M.A. पूरी करने के बाद उम्मुल ने जेएनयू में ही एमफिल करने के लिए दाखिला लिया। बर्ष 2014 में उम्मुल का जापान के इंटरनेशनल लीडरशिप ट्रेनिंग प्रोग्राम में चयन हुआ, पिछले 18 साल में इस प्रोग्राम में सिर्फ 3 भारतीयों का चयन हुआ है। इस प्रोग्राम के जरिये उम्मुल दिव्यांग लोगो को यह सिखाती थी कैसे आत्मनिर्भर होकर इज्जत की जिंदगी जीयी जाए। एक साल के ट्रेनिंग प्रोग्राम के बाद उम्मुल बापिस भारत आयी और अपनी एमफिल की पढाई पूरी की। एमफिल पूरी होने के बाद उम्मुल जेएनयू से ही पीएचडी करने लगी। जनवरी 2016 में उम्मुल ने IAS की तैयारी शुरू की और अपने पहले प्रयास में ही देश की सर्वोच्च प्रसाशनिक सेवा परीक्षा में 420 वी रैंक हासिल की।

दायित्व निर्वहन

IAS में चयन के बाद उम्मुल ने अपने माता पिता के प्रति अपने दायित्वों को निर्बहन करना का फैसला लिया। उम्मुल ने वो सब कुछ भुला दिया जो उनके माता पिता ने उनके साथ किया था, उम्मुल अब बस दुनिया की हर सुविधा अपने माता पिता को देना चाहती है।

उम्मुल खैर और उनके जैसी तमाम लड़किया हमारे समाज को पूरानी एवं परांपरागत सोच को बढ़ने के लिए मजबूर करती है और उन सभी के लिए प्रेरणा बनती है जो अपनी समस्याओ या किसी बीमारी के चलते जीवन को जीना छोड़ देते है।
